Screening of a Cambodian rapper and hooking with WAC staff

Got down from San Francisco yesterday to do a screening of a short documentary I’m working on about this Cambodian rapper, Prach Ly, from Long Beach California. There’s two screenings Thursday, 8pm and Friday at 7pm–both screenings are at the Walker Art. Uh, forgot to add, Prach is also performing both times. He’s a Cambodian rapper, but he doesn’t rap about pimps and hoes like most rappers. He raps more about history, culture and identity. I think he’s unique, but he doesn’t.

Also it’s exciting to see Witt from the Walker Art Center again, he’s a really cool guy and great to talk to. We picked up Prach at 8pm and went to eat at this bar. Witt wanted to pay for the bill, around 60 bucks but his credit card got rejected. Having a new baby and paying for all those teens in his program can do that to you cuz I also work with teens and my credit cards get rejected also. I feel you Witt. Witt needs to get a raise in my opinion.

Today we met Megan, whom I met the first time I was here in Minneapolis, but totally forgot how she looked like and played it off like I remember her. Hope she’s not mad–I’m bad with names and faces. Megan is crazy for a white girl, very outgoing and outspoken which is cool. I didn’t think she was like that–I thought she would be like those typical conservative white girls–no offense.

One thing about Minneapolis, too damn cold even if we’re from San Francisco. Everyone keeps mentioning “are you nervous about the screening?” I look at them like whatever. They’re probably like the what “fuck” is wrong with this guy. I’ve been in screenings before so I’m all ready for whatever. Prach is probably shittin in his pants, but he’ll tell you “no I’m cool”.

Right now we’re hanging in he Teen office and Witt is already mentioning about the credit card situation, but he doesn’t know I understand the situation. Uh, by the way Witt’s nickname is Keanu Reeve, but he doesn’t like the nickname cuz he thinks Keanu is a bad actor. But he doesn’t realize it’s the way they walk. The screening is about an hour away. Not sure how many audiences are going to show up. It our first screening for a group so just interested to see how people react to it. I hope to see more Cambodians for the screenings, but my guess there ain’t going to be many. I’ll be surprise to see more then five.
